Sync Licensing 101 for Independent Artists
There is something special about hearing your song underneath a scene in a movie or seeing it used in a commercial. A good sync placement can create licensing income and introduce your music to an audience that may never have found you through a normal release. Getting music into film, television and advertising is not simply a matter of sending an MP3. You need good music, clean rights and a professional approach.
What Is a Sync Placement?
A synchronization license gives someone permission to combine music with visual content. That can include films, television programmes, advertisements, video games, trailers and online video. There are usually two sides to clear: the composition and the master recording. If you wrote and recorded everything yourself you may control both. With co-writers, producers or labels involved, know exactly who controls each right.
What Makes a Song Good for Sync?
A music supervisor is usually solving a storytelling problem. They may need something romantic, tense, rebellious, nostalgic, uplifting, dark or energetic. Flexible songs with a strong emotional identity can be useful in visual storytelling. Instrumental versions, clean versions and alternate edits can also make your catalogue easier to pitch.
How Artists Get Sync Placements
Build a Sync-Ready Catalogue
Start with your strongest songs. Make sure your masters sound professional, prepare instrumental versions and keep the metadata organized. Your sync folder should clearly identify the artist, song title, writers, publisher information, master owner, ISRC, lyrics and contact information.
Pitch Through Sync Companies and Libraries
Music libraries and licensing companies can connect independent artists with productions. Read every agreement carefully and understand exclusivity, territory, term, ownership and commissions before signing. Platforms and marketplaces change. Do not build your entire sync strategy around a single service. Songtradr, for example, has announced changes to its Marketplace in 2026.
Network With Music Supervisors
A music supervisor is much more likely to respond when the email is short, the music fits the project and the rights information is clear. Do not send the same giant biography to everyone.
Work With Filmmakers
Independent film, local advertising, documentaries, web series and games can be valuable places to build relationships. Your first placement does not have to be a major studio production.
When the Music Gets Selected
The license should explain media, territory, duration, exclusivity, placement, fee and renewal. Make sure you understand what rights you are granting.
The MLC does not administer sync licenses. Sync licensing is separate from the U.S. digital mechanical royalty system. Depending on the territory and use, audiovisual performances may also generate performance royalties.
How to Improve Your Chances
• Create music that works emotionally.
• Keep your rights organised.
• Prepare clean and instrumental versions.
• Build real industry relationships.
• Respond quickly and professionally.
Sync is competitive. A song can be rejected simply because it does not fit the scene. Keep building a catalogue so the next brief has another song that may be exactly right.
